In 1989, filmmaker José Luis Garcia went to North Korea to attend the international meeting of Communist Youth and he brought back exceptional VHS archives. There, he had met a young peace activist, the South Korean Im Su-Kyong, who became the “flower of unification” after crossing the forbidden boarder by foot, driven by the desire to sacrifice herself for an ideal. Twenty Years later, still fascinated by this character, he finds her mysterious and asks her about her dreams, her years in prison and her personal life.
José Luis García was born in Buenos Aires. He worked as a cinematographer for directors Martín Rejtman, Fernando Spiner and Alejandro Agresti, among others, before directing his debut documentary feature in 2005, Cándido López, los campos de batalla. The Girl from the South is his latest documentary.
