The desperate inhabitants of a Ukrainian town work every day in small illegal mines. They dig everywhere: in abandoned mines, under the cellars of demolished buildings, and even in their own gardens. Fifteen-year-old Yura is one of these illegal miners despite being the grandson of the former director of a once huge Soviet factory. Grown up by necessity, he replaces his parents and provides for the family, and especially for his two sisters.
Director Marianna Kaat was born in Estonia, Tallinn, where she lives today. She did her PhD at the Saint-Petersburg State Theater and Arts Academy. Until 1991 she worked as a script editor and a director, and thereafter as the aquisition manager for Estonian Television. In 1998 she founded her own production company, Baltic Film Production, and since then has successfully produced and directed award-winning documentary films for the international market.
