Considered as the white gold of Palestine, natural stone is the country's most sought-after raw material. However, the stone mining industry widely caters to the needs of Israeli construction, including for the illegal settlements on Palestinian land. In the villages, cities and refugee camps, natural stone is mined at an unbearable rate, leading to social, environmental and health problems. Palestinian complaints are met with Israeli repression and the disinterest of international organizations. Palestinian authorities remain in denial and helpless in this disturbing situation.
Muayad Alayan is a filmmaker and director of photography based in Jerusalem. His last short film Lesh Sabreen? was recognized and officially selected in over 60 festivals worldwide. Alayan is also a teacher at the Dar Al Kalima College in Bethlehem, where he teaches film and cinematography.
Laila Higazi is a biologist and environmental filmmaker. After moving to Jerusalem, she organized and coordinated several environmental media workshops in the West Bank.
